Write Queen Discusses Diabetes
by Freda Douglas

I am starting my series of articles by delving into the subject of diabetes.
I do this for a number of reasons. My first husband died at age 58 because he refused to take care of himself so if I can teach one reader not to do that, it will accomplish a worthwhile purpose.

Statistics tell us that many diabetics go undiagnosed when a simple blood test will confirm or deny its presence.

I deal every day with a natural deterrent to diabetes as well as many other diseases, and this series of articles is (1) to put the terms used in these diseases into layman's language to educate my readers and (2) to encourage my readers to take better care of their bodies because 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'.

The terms I have chosen related to DIABETES (diabetes mellitus) are taken from MedicineNet.com.

Abdomen The belly, that part of the body that contains all of the structures between the chest and the pelvis. The abdomen is separated from the chest by the diaphragm, the powerful muscle spanning the body cavity below the lungs. Other common terms related to the abdomen are abdominal, abdominal pain.

Acidosis Too much acid in the body. The condition is associated with diabetic ketoacidosis, lung disease and severe kidney disease.

Baseline Information gathered at the beginning of a study, as when your doctor suspects a diabetic condition.

Blood glucose also referred to generically as blood sugar the main sugar that the body makes from the food in the diet.

Cut an area of severed skin. If you have a cut that doesn't heal, tell your doctor. It could be an indication of a pre-diabetic condition.

Fasting blood glucose a fasting blood glucose, a method for learning how much glucose (sugar) there is in a blood sample taken after an overnight fast, is commonly used inn the detection of diabetes mellitus.
