Living Waters or Broken Cisterns
by Rochelle Arnold

In one of my more recent blogs I wrote about the importance of dreams and visions. God speaks to us when we slumber on our beds. “For God speaks once, and even twice, yet no one notices it. In a dream, a vision of the night [one may hear God’s voice], when deep sleep falls on men. While slumbering upon their bed, then He opens the ears of men and seals their instruction.” (Job 33:14-16)

Well, recently I have been having more instructive type dreams regarding what my specific work or ministry is as the Lord reveals the details. So, the dream is as follows:

I’m in my Mother-in-law's bathroom there is water shooting out of the bathtub and lots of water on the floor. In the next scene I’m riding my bike, or I was trying to ride my bike it had an engine (more like a small motorcycle) it needed fuel, so I took some gas from the back of a pickup truck and put it in the gas tank. I rode my bike extremely fast down some really steep hills like roller coaster tracks and it required a lot of skill. In the dream I was both excited and frightened at the speed at which I was going and the sheer navigation it took to maneuver the narrow track.

Now for the interpretation using Ira Milligan’s dream interpretation book, Understanding the Dreams You Dream: Biblical Keys to Hearing God’s Voice in the Night. Here I will break down each symbol and find the correlating Scripture that goes with it. With the help of the Holy Spirit, I can then understand the dreams meaning.

Mother-in-law equals legalistic church, meddler or trouble. Bathroom is desire for cleansing prayer of repentance, passion or strong lust. Ephesians 5:25-26 “Husbands love your wives even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of the word.” The Word of God is key here because water means Spirit, the Word, the Spirit of God. The emphasis is on sound doctrine. In the dream the bathtub is spraying water out of a crack in the side. Jeremiah 2:13 “For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken Me the fountain of living waters and hewed them out of cisterns, broken cisterns (man's doctrines) that can hold no water.”

I believe the bathtub in this dream represents a broken cistern. Cisterns were made out of stone and used to store water in biblical times. It is likened to a reservoir for storing rain water, but the problem is when the cisterns were broken, they were useless. The Bible says that for those who believe living water will flow from their bellies. (John 7:38) That living water comes from the Holy Spirit and not from ourselves. As we learn in Jeremiah 2:13, God the Father is the fountain of living waters. This Scripture is a rebuke for those who have turned away from God and following the Holy Spirit and the Word, but now chase after manmade ideas, doctrines and philosophies.

Instead the Lord requires us to be filled in our vessel or cistern a reservoir of living water that comes from Him. When we do this, we will then be able to overflow with His presence which will lead to signs, wonders and miracles. This is where we become like Jesus and do even greater works.

Gas represents fuel or prayer. Jude 1:20 “But you beloved building up yourselves or refueling on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” Praying in the Holy Ghost is referring to speaking in tongues, which is the Spirit of God praying through us. The pickup truck is representing my personal ministry or natural work. Galatians 6:5 “For every man shall bear his own burden or do his own work.” The motorcycle bicycle with an engine means individual personal ministry with swift progress. Roller coaster can mean excitement and also refers to Isaiah 40:4 “Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low and the crooked shall be made straight and the rough places made smooth.”

Prophetic word:

I will supply all your needs according to my riches in glory. Do not forsake My living waters for broken vessels or cisterns that are crumbling. For broken cisterns or man's doctrines (false doctrines) will not be able to quench your thirst, instead seek me to supply all of your needs My living water, the Holy Spirit is able to quench your thirst and satisfy both your physical and spiritual needs. He who believes in me out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water (John 7:38) The broken cisterns cannot hold refreshing water therefore the vessels become empty, vacant, and serve no function or purpose; They become dry and eventually die trying to make it in a self-made way, according to man’s ideas and not mine. To try to find spiritual fulfillment any other way than from Me, is fruitless. “Many are the plans of a man’s heart, but the Lord's purposes prevail.” Proverbs 19:21
