I'm in Debt
by PamFord Davis

We often watch the Andy Griffith show. The stories are timeless (though my husband and I wish they’d rotate the program to other time slots). Today’s scripture passage reminded me of an episode that focused on a fire in Wally’s Service Station.

While Gomer Pyle napped, rags smoldered in a trash barrel inside the building. Entering the station, Sheriff Taylor saw smoke billowing throughout the room. He immediately went into action; woke Gomer and doused the fire. Scolding Gomer, Andy warned him to be careful storing oily rags.

Gomer was overwhelmed. Expressing his gratitude, he said that Andy had saved his life. He was in his debt. Gomer was willing to serve Andy for the rest of his life.

“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me (Galatians 2:20 NASB).”

I’m in debt to Jesus. I could have spent eternity in hellfire.

“Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41 NASB).”

Hell is real. Jesus rescued me from the flames and death.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23 NASB).”
