Nipping at Your Heels
by PamFord Davis

Do you have a dog nipping at your heels?

We have cats, not dogs. Our male cat is very affectionate. He doesn’t nip at my heels but has tried to nibble at my toes. Does that count?

“Why should I fear in the days of evil,
When the iniquity at my heels surrounds me (Psalm 49:5 NKJV)?”

We don’t hear much about iniquity anymore. Iniquity is sin; as in injustice and immorality. We shun such topics in everyday conversations. God spoke words of judgment through His prophet and messenger, Jeremiah.

“From the prophet even to the priest
Everyone deals falsely.
For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly,
Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’
When there is no peace.
Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?
No! They were not at all ashamed,
Nor did they know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
In the time of their punishment
They shall be cast down,’ says the Lord (Jeremiah 8:10b-12 NLKV).”

The LORD is merciful. He forgives.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s (Psalm 103:1-5 NKJV).”
