Is John 17 The LORD's Prayer?
by Tonja Taylor

John 17 is an excellent prayer by the LORD! The LORD Himself spoke it, so that may be why one pastor was calling it "The LORD's Prayer." Most people call the prayer in Luke 11 "The LORD's Prayer." I don't see Jesus Himself calling it that; I see the disciples asking Jesus how to pray, and Luke 11: 2-4 is the format He gives them.

Actually, I have read more than one place that the prayer He gives them is an outline of how to pray; it includes various forms of prayer: Worship (v 2), Petition (v 3), Supplication (v 4), and more.

My Pastor talked the other day about the importance of prayer. I don't think he even mentioned the LORD's Prayer (Luke 11 version) specifically, but he DID say and suggest that we go thru the Bible and find the many prayers that are already in there as prayers--such as Luke 11 and John 17, and pray those as God led!

He also said that, since we know that the Bible is God's will, that we can go through and find various Scriptures and pray them back to God and know that, because we have received Jesus in our heart, that God is our Daddy and hears us, and that, since we're praying His Word back to Him--that we have what we ask (although it may not get answered immediately, cause there is an enemy (but he is defeated!) who tries to hinder God's answers coming to us).

He also emphasized of course, the importance of praying in tongues (evidence of The Baptism of the Holy Spirit), because we can never go wrong praying in the Spirit--we always pray the perfect will of God when we pray in the Spirit. The more, the better (Unless it would interrupt a church service or something.).

The main thing is to pray!

So, I do not disagree with any pastor about John 17 being the LORD's Prayer, because it is one of the prayers He prayed! It's just not what people usually call "The LORD's Prayer."

Note: Praying the LORD's Prayer is one form of praying to the LORD. However, the LORD may even lead you to sing a prayer to Him. (Some rabbis have been quoted as stating that the LORD did not speak the world into existence, but He sang it!)

The most important thing is to be sensitive to what the LORD wants. He is faithful to guide you in right paths in prayer, and every part of life!
