PIANO LESSONS (excerpt) An Eagle's Heart
by Tonja Taylor

"You were born to soar, Rebecca," Seth said. "You are strong in spirit. You will rise above this."

Rebecca nodded, and a sudden memory flashed into her mind. She heard her dear late father's words:  "You have an eagle's heart, my daughter. You are strong, and spirited, and wise; able to fly into the storm, unafraid."

A tear formed in her eye, and rolled down her left cheek.

"Remember the story of the eagle chick born and raised in the turkey family?"  She said, raising her eyes to meet Seth's warm blue gaze. "The eagle always knew she was different, always yearned to soar. And it wasn't until she allowed herself to hang around other eagles that recognized and told her who she really was, that she began to truly fly."

He nodded and hugged her gently. "You're right, so go for it!"

"Thanks, Seth, I will. New adventures are in the air--I can't wait to see where God takes me!"

That night, she wrote a poem called "As the Eagle Goes"

The eagle is a bird of noble birth,
Sober and majestic, full of grace;
Meant to soar above the winds of earth,
And focus on the sun's eternal face.

The eagle's born into a downy nest,
But as he grows, he feels the thorny stings;
And forced to leave the safety of his rest,
He falls and learns to use his gift of wings.

The eagle doesn't struggle with his foe;
He takes the serpent in his taloned lock
And skimming clouds, he drops it far below,
Where it will meet destruction at the rock.

The eagle when he's ill complains to none
But lies upon the rock that's bathed in light,
Welcoming the healing of the sun--
Or soaring in his spirit's final flight.

The eagle doesn't struggle with the wind;
He simply bides his time and when it's right,
He lifts his wings and feels himself ascend,
And glories in the freedom of his flight.
