Perfect Family Portrait
by PamFord Davis

Mom knew the importance of family snapshots and portraits. Before marrying Dad, she had worked at a Downtown Syracuse photography studio. She took lots of snapshots for our family albums and we frequently posed for family portraits.

I don’t recall ever going to a studio for our portraits. We didn’t travel to Sears or Olin Mills. Professional photographers came to our home, made a sales pitch and set up an appointment date to return. One photographer made a lasting impression.

His seating arrangement left a lot to be desired. He lowered our ironing board to a level that met his approval and had us seated on it. Our weight exceeded manufacturer’s standards; you can guess what happened. There was no guesswork at Jesus’ baptism.

John the Baptist witnessed the Trinity. It would have made the perfect family portrait.

“Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent Him, saying, ‘I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?’  But Jesus answering said to him, ‘Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then he permitted Him.  After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,  and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased (Matthew 3:13-17 NASB).”

John saw Jesus (Son of God) as Son of Man. He saw the Holy Spirit as a dove and heard the voice of the Heavenly Father!
