Piano Lessons (excerpt): The Secret Sign of a Christian
by Tonja Taylor

"Miss Zoe," said Seth, "Did you know that, a long time ago, the people who loved Jesus had to hide underground, in the catacombs?"

Zoe held up her stuffed dog to him and pretended to answer through her. "Kitty combs? Why?"

"No, CAT-a-combs," said Seth. "There were many mean people who hated Jesus and didn't want the Christians to worship Him."

Zoe looked sad. "That's bad!"

"You are right, little one," Seth said, and hugged her. "In a place called Rome, when those who loved Jesus would come out, if they were captured, they'd try to find out if there were any more Christians around. They had a secret code. They would walk up and casually make a sweep in the sand like this--" at this, Seth demonstrated by making a high arc in the dirt with his shoe.

"Then, if there was another Christian there, that second person who loved Jesus walk up and make the bottom arc, completing the fish." Again, Seth demonstrated. "Together, they'd make the ichthys, which stood for 'Jesus Christ, Son of God, [Our] Savior'. fish-symbol that stands for Christian, and they would know they were in the Royal Family of the living Christ."

"Ick-what?" said Zoe.

"Ick-hize, or close to it," said Seth. But you can just say, 'Jesus fish,' okay?"

"Jesus fish!" said Zoe. "Yes, we used to have a fish on our car. Do you have one? Becca says people who have a fish on their car love Jesus."

Seth and Rebecca both laughed a little, then Rebecca said gently, "Zoe, Darling, we will soon have a fish symbol on our new car, but that doesn't mean one believes in Jesus, really. I wish we could say that everyone with a fish on their car did believe. If they have a fish, they probably do, or at least are not against Him! We hope they do. But only the LORD knows that for sure."

She smiled. "The important thing is that He knows we believe in Him, doesn't He, Precious?!" She held out her arms for a hug.

"Yes!" Zoe squealed, and ran into Rebecca arms and squeezed her tight. "I'm so glad you believe, Becca!"

"Amen, and I'm so glad that in the USA, we don't have to keep it a secret!"
