Thanksgiving, Together Once More
by PamFord Davis

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His faithfulness is everlasting (1 Chronicles 16:34 NASB).”

Central NY State Thanksgiving memories begin with thoughts of Dad.

On Thanksgiving mornings, he opened the door to the formal entry room to our house (used only for storage). Taking a turkey from the frigid room, he carried it to Mom in the kitchen.

Thanksgiving dinner preparation would begin. The oven door would open and close for hours as Mom basted and checked a big turkey for our family of seven. The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade drew the attention of not only the Ford children, but Mom as well.

She worked her way from the kitchen to living room for frequent peaks at the only television in the house. Sounds of fire engine sirens and marching bands filled the air as the aroma of turkey made me anxious for dinner.

Dinnertime finally arrived.

Waiting for Dad to ask the blessing, we gathered around the kitchen table made festive for holiday observances. Eagerly, we filled our plates. Some chose meat from the turkey breast; others wanted thighs or turkey legs. Leftovers were saved for supper turkey sandwiches.

We made room on the best china for mashed potatoes and gravy; dressing, turnips or parsnips, squash, green beans, jellied cranberries and hot buttered rolls. Soon, it was time for dessert plates.

Mom had baked pies the day before. They made the meal complete.

Variety of tastes led to a selection from cherry, mincemeat, and pumpkin. My favorite then and now is pumpkin. I’ve heard that of all pies, pumpkin is the healthiest choice. I realize that dollops of whipped cream or scoops of ice cream may nullify the benefits.

Sadly, my parents and oldest sister are no longer living. Siblings are scattered; yet, Thanksgiving memories bring us together once more.
