Contemporary Cathedral Worship
by Ruthie Alekseeva

Drops of blood mix with the loam at Jesus’s feet, but he continues to pray. “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.”

With haunting beauty, the Jubilate cathedral choir perfectly captures this moment with its soulful rendition of the hymn When You Prayed Beneath the Trees. On its website, Jubilate.co.uk, you will find the lyrics to this and hundreds of other hymns written by modern-day hymn writers. The hymns are available on YouTube but some can be purchased as an MP3 or CD. Piano scores and scorch scores are also available for some songs, just be sure you familiarise yourself with Jubilate’s copyright policy.

Jubilate makes planning worship services a breeze, providing Bible passages related to each song’s theme and by grouping hymns of the same theme under the Themed Collections tab. Click on this tab and you will find hymns relating to communion, Holy Week and Easter, Christmas, Harvest, the Psalms, mission work, Lent, weddings, Pentecost, peace, and creation. Also under this tab, are songs suitable for children’s worship.

Under the Liturgy tab you will find a spoken Call to Worship based on first Thessalonians and the book of Acts as well as prayers for the unemployed, the oppressed, those of other faiths, and many other current issues.

If choral singing is not your taste, visit the sister website, RESOUNDworship.org to hear contemporary worship songs written by aspiring Christian artists. The Jubilate website also provides scores for instrumental arrangements (under the Themed Collections tab) which could be used to sing Jubilate’s hymns in a different style.

Jubilate, originated in London fifty years ago as a ministry of the Anglican Church which was wanting to modernise hymn writing. It now accepts submissions from modern-day hymn writers from all around the world as a project of the Song & Hymn Writers Foundation. Although I don’t agree with everything on the site, I pray it continues fifty years more.
