The Enemy Within
by Angela M. Baker-Bridge

I should have protected you,
But, I really didn't know.

I never dreamed it was possible,
Nor meant for it to happen this way.

We've dodged so many bullets together,
Just you and I.

Some grazed by,
Barely leaving their mark.

Others penetrated cold and deep,
Draining life from within.

There were even spears,
They came through the back.

Darts, grenades, shattering blows,
One right after another.

Why is this happening?
How long must we endure?

Count the scars if you can,
Too many, too long.

But, through it all you stood firm,
Never missing a beat.

Until, ... until...
The worst betrayal of all ...

I only meant to close my eyes to rest,
Not to forsake you, but I left you unprotected.

The most piercing blow of all came,
Wounding you deeply and forever.

How could I have known,
That your worst enemy was hidden within?

The evidence points to me,
But, how could it be?

Why would I be stabbing you,
So slowly, repeatedly, consistently?

You and I are one,
I cannot live without you!

Forgive me,
Oh my poor wounded heart!

I honestly didn't know,
That it was me.

Your most dangerous enemy of all,
Living within.

Please let me help you,
Heal you, love you.

I heard your painful cries, just not your warnings,
But I'm listening now.

Speak to me.
Sing your song.
