A Call to Follow
by PamFord Davis

My life hasn’t been boring; I’ve lived in several states. Both coasts are familiar to me; I grew up in Central New York State and called Southern California home in the 1970’s. My husband drifted from one radio station to another to fulfill his childhood dreams. We made countless friends along the way (in our 53 years of marriage) but never stayed long enough to put down deep roots.

We’ve shared faith and fellowship with friends but I cannot share their memories. They can’t share mine. Many friends married and raised their children in a 70 mile radius from where they were born. My boundaries have measured over 2,600 miles from my birthplace.

I wonder what life was like for Sarah, wife of Abraham.

God called Abraham to leave his homeland.

“By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he left, not knowing where he was going (Hebrews 11:8 NASB).”

Sarah answered her call to follow.

“For in this way the holy women of former times, who hoped in God, also used to adorn themselves, being subject to their own husbands, just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord; and you have proved to be her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear (1 Peter 3:5-6 NASB).”

Yes, I’ve been a sojourner; yet, I have roots.

“… so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:14-19 NASB).”
