My Beautiful Butterfly
by Angela M. Baker-Bridge

Beautiful butterfly, is it really time to go?

How can I not be there to daily watch you grow?

Right from that first moment, you made your presence known,

Uniqueness and splendor, you have always shown.

Challenging the odds, so you could grow your way,

Technicolor dreaming has brought you to this day.

I knew I could not keep you long in my cocoon,

Yet didn't know, solo flights, were launched quite this soon.

Wasn't it just yesterday, a wiggly worm you were?

I told you wings would finally grow, replacing fuzzy fur!

Your special ways, filled my days, with laughter and delight,

Though just as much I loved you, when you woke me in the night.

Sure your caterpillar crawl, was a joy to see,

But oh the day, I watched you dance, I knew you must fly free.

Still, I kissed your boo-boos, and wiped your tears away,

Praying in my mother's heart, somehow with me you'd stay.

Remember all our silly talks while brushing tangled hair?

And then there were the clothes I bought that you refused to wear!

You were my first, and I admit, I had so much to learn,

But be assured, the world for you, is all that I did yearn.

What wisdom can I give you now, as your path you chart?

Well, lock your doors, watch your money, and follow your own heart!

Stay true to who you are, while knowledge you do drink,

Sift through all you learn, absorb what makes you think.

Navigate your way, to safely soar on high,

Be sure to laugh each day, yet allow yourself to cry.

Alone you'll never be, just let your goodness shine,

The world is now your stage, but your past is always mine.

With love I set you free, my pain I must ignore,

For all that you now are, there's so much more in store.

So beautiful butterfly, be off and on your way,

Know that you are loved, and call me everyday!
