Mother, May I?
by PamFord Davis

‘Mother, May I?’

That’s not only a polite question but also a childhood game. I might add that I have vivid memories of playing the game as a young girl.

On one occasion we played it as an indoor game. There were 3 of us and we took turns in the role of mother. My older sister Laureen and I were in best friend Carol’s house. That was the perfect place for ‘Mother May I’ because it was an old house with large rooms. We needed lots of space.

Carol’s living room and separate TV room had no barrier. She faced us from the TV room as we had a clear view of her in the connecting room.

Maybe you’re not familiar with ‘Mother May I.’

The object of the game is simple.

The person designated as mother stands a measurable distance away from the other children. Facing her, children take turns asking her permission to step forward towards her.

Example: ‘Mother, may I take 3 baby steps?’

If a child forgets to say ‘Mother May I’ (at any time) mother sends them back to where they started. The first person to reach mother wins the game.

The life of faith has rules to follow.

Not all ask the Father.

He wants to guide our steps.

‘Father, May I?’

“A man’s heart plans his way,
but the Lord determines his steps (Proverbs 16:9 HCSB).”
