How can one learn the art of contentment in the midst of intense hardships?

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Philippians 4:11-13 NIV

 

Philippians is known as the ‘Epistle of Joy’ because the Apostle Paul, the author, modeled an affirmative attitude while in prison.  Paul emphasized to the Saints that rejoicing and gratitude in any circumstance were important traits to acquire in finding sustained contentment.

Paul could have very well taken on a bitter attitude ending up in prison for preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Yet, instead of resenting the unfairness of this imprisonment, he embodied an attitude of gratitude.  

How do we learn to discover this same secret in finding contentment, regardless of difficulties?

Although Paul faced severe hardships from shipwrecks, poverty, beatings, illness, subjected to harsh outside elements, and imprisonment, he learned the art of being content in whatever circumstance he faced. Paul realized he was unable to change or improve any of those uncontrollable circumstances. Paul also recognized his human limitations to overcome such hardships

To find this same secret, we can admit we don’t like what is happening, but Paul is trying to tell us to obtain lasting contentment, we must; admit what is true, let go of what we cannot control, and place absolute trust in relying on God’s love to empower us to persevere through any adversity.

Here is a list of beneficial daily practices we can incorporate to cultivate acquiring contentment.

  • Make a list of what you are thankful for, review it daily
  • Take control of your thoughts
  • Replace limiting thoughts with scriptures that offer hope
  • Let go of that ‘thing’ you cannot control
  • Submit, abide, respond from God’s love
  • Serve and help others
  • Trust God’s faithfulness

 

 

 Prayer

Father, continue empowering each one in adversity to abide deeply in your love spirit who gives strength, wisdom, and hope in the darker seasons.
