Holding Down the Fort
by PamFord Davis

‘Hold down the fort.’

I’ve heard that expression countless times; to be perfectly honest I can’t say I know the complexities of that command or all that entails.

After watching so many tales of the Wild West, I should be an expert on forts. Soldiers, their families and a splatter of civilians found security behind barred doors of the fort. Scouts bravely surveyed the outside; keeping eyes peeled for Native Americans on the warpath.

Did the fort commander bear the burden of holding down the fort or did he delegate responsibility?

The church is under attack by Satan and demonic forces. It’s spiritual warfare. We must rely on God for safety.

“God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah (Psalm 46:1-3 ESV).”

God is our fortress.

”The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress (Psalm 46:11 ESV).”

God holds down the fort!
