VANITY IS NOT ATTRACTIVE
by linzy bruno

So I told her—

"I know it’s ironic to say the least,

how such a relentless quest

can wake such an ugly beast.

And once that beast rears its head,

it resists going back to sleep;

vanity takes hold,

and the lies of true beauty run deep."

I’ve seen her let vain comparisons lead her to great sorrow,

she flees to the corner and drops to the floor,

because perfection, other than what is natural,

shall be found in her powder room, no more….

For her quest turned toward illusion,

stunning beauty not only for her joy,

that constant call of the mirror

seductively and categorically destroys….

So I told her—

vanity is obsessively checking

to see if beauty is still there,

but vanity disparages beauty

and of beauty, she need not be so aware.

For the true alley of beauty is confidence;

clinging to faith in what God has made;

flaunting a known unnecessary,

as well as concerns regarding the fade….

And perhaps I should also tell her,

vanity cannot befriend attractiveness,

even as it may seem,

for this defines insecurity;

aching to attain that of which

can only be had in a dream….
