Gone fishing…

I’d guess gone fishing signs went out with the Edsel. Today, not many shop keepers would close their businesses for an afternoon of fishing. Most even stay open on the Lord’s Day. Jesus knew the strengths and patience of fishermen; He called them into service.

“While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’  Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him (Matthew 4:18-22 ESV).”

Jesus gave fishermen an invitation. Their response was immediate; they left their nets and boat behind and began to follow Jesus. The first step led to a lifetime walk of faith.

“And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;  Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him (Matthew 10:1-4 ESV).”

Jesus calls.

It’s time to go fishing!
