School Pictures
by PamFord Davis

I wish I still had my old school pictures.

As I recall, my schools didn’t offer individual pictures until the junior and senior grades. We had only class pictures. Professional photographers grouped us by rows with taller students standing in the top back rows and shortest sitting in the front row. I was easy to find; always seated in the front row.

Group pictures seem to bring out the joker in any crowd.

A quick scan of yearly photos would usually reveal the class clowns. Boys seemed to get a thrill from making silly faces. They frequently stuck out their tongues at the camera. Teachers were not amused and I’d guess parents were embarrassed.

Apparently sticking out the tongue is nothing new.

“Whom are you mocking?
Against whom do you open your mouth wide
and stick out your tongue (Isaiah 57:4 ESV)?”

Shame-shame!

There’s only one appropriate time for sticking out the tongue.

Open wide; say ah.

“Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth (Jeremiah 1:6 ESV).”
