The Me Generation
by Ken Barnes

If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire: and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods nor worship the golden statue that you have set up.” (Daniel 3: 17-18 NASB)

The election of November 7, 2023, in the State of Virginia reveals that there has been a departure from God. Abortion became the key issue in the election. It has gained this power because of the self-centeredness of the Me generation. We can either bow down on the altar of abortion rights or remain faithful to Christ.

David Wells, the author of The Courage to be Protestant, talks about the concept of the "autonomous self" in his book. All morality, mystery, and meaning are found in the self, not God." The great idols of the Western world are self-fulfillment, self-actualization, or simply self. Abortion is a direct result of putting oneself at the center of the universe. We worship at the altar of the expediency of our wants and desires. If a pregnancy gets in the way of our lifestyle, we eliminate the distraction. In our recent election in Virginia, TV ads showed candidates running with young women chanting, my body, my choice. We live in the Me generation. What I want becomes right, irrespective of God's laws.

The drumbeat of the Republican political operatives has already started. They are saying we need a new message on abortion, one that appeals more to women and that is less extreme. My question to Christians is, what is our goal: to win elections or to obey the Word of God? The Bible clearly teaches that it is wrong to take innocent life. Our goal as Christians is to advocate for righteousness, whether prevalent in our culture or not. Compromise never brings honor to God.

We must take up the spirit of the three Hebrew boys in Daniel 3. We must say that God can bring us political victories if it is His will, but even if He doesn't, we will not worship at the altar of abortion rights. We will not bow down to the self-serving God of the Me generation.
