Crosses On Cars
by Ruthie Alekseeva

Waiting For The Light Change

Shari turns her air conditioner up and her car stereo down, as she adjusts her rear-view mirror.

That’s better, she thinks. Now, I can see clearer.

Waiting for the light change, she drums her fingers on the steering wheel.

Come on, she thinks. I must get home.

She glances in the rear-view mirror, at the car behind her.

Oh cool, Shari thinks. They have a cross hanging from their rear-view mirror. It looks exactly like mine.

Next, Shari glances at the car beside her.

Oh wowthey also have a cross dangling from their mirror. What a wonderful sight. Hope I’ll see them in Heaven one day.

Sharing The Gospel

At a recent event I attended, I noticed that many of the cars in the car park had crosses dangling from their rear-view mirrors. The number of crosses surprised me, and it made me feel happy that so many Christians want others knowing that they believe in Jesus, especially when the rapid decline of Christian values happening in The West, at the moment, occasionally evokes hostility towards those that stand up for them.

But can we do better? I thought, as I walked through this carpark.

I mean, what can a cross dangling from a rear-view mirror really achieve and hanging ornaments from your rear-view mirror is illegal anyway. But even if they weren’t illegal, perhaps, for a brief second, a cross might remind someone of Jesus’ existence and of His death and resurrection on the cross, but what if someone passing by has never heard that story, a cross hanging from a rear-view mirror won’t trigger any memories of Jesus’ life at all.

Sadly, knowledge of the Bible account of Jesus in The West shows signs that it’s flagging because, although at one time, pretty much all Australians attended church on Sundays, even if they didn’t classify themselves as Christians, the number of parents bringing their families to church for religious and moral instruction these days, has remained low for decades. We even have footage on YouTube of a street evangelist asking an Australian man of Anglo-Saxon origin if he knew why Christians celebrate Christmas. The man admitted that, no, he didn’t really know why at all.

That’s a dangerous situation for people in The West and people of any location to find themselves in because we don’t only live this earthly life. The Bible says one day we’ll die and face God’s judgement on how we have lived our lives. If God finds us guilty of sin, as all of us shall, we can’t live with Him in Heaven. Instead, we must spend eternity in Hell. I don’t want that for anyone I know, and I’m sure you don’t want that for anyone that you love either, so I suggest, rather than a cross on your rear-view mirror, which is illegal anyway, placing a Christian bumper sticker on the boot of your car with a Christian website on it that clearly presents the Gospel.

The Bible says, Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. So, the best way of helping someone realise their need of salvation is through speaking the truth about God, but that kind of courage can take time to develop. In the meantime, we can find smaller ways that take less courage to spread the message of God’s love and forgiveness, like a car bumper sticker.

Seeing Results

I placed a sticker on my car that promoted the NeedGod.Com website. A few months later, I noticed a crumpled piece of paper under my windscreen wiper. At first I thought,

Oh no, it’s a ticket.

But, instead, a fellow Christian, someone I had never met and someone I probably won’t see until I reach Heaven, had left a thank you note under my wiper, stating the website on my bumper sticker was a favourite of hers and that she hoped other pedestrians would see it also. Hopefully, they have and have looked up the website. I won’t know the results until I reach Heaven, but, although spoken words seem best, God can use anything you give Him in service to reach through the Bible ignorance and illiteracy that exists in the world at this  moment and save them from the devasation sin causes on earth and then the eternal judgement which comes after that.
