Lesson Learned
by W. Yvonne Birnell

Christmas comes just once a year
And children hold it very dear
They gather round the Christmas tree
Hoping soon their gifts they'll see

Imagine if you will with me
Just sit back so you can see
What it's like for girls or boys
Watching others open toys

Sitting there with eyes aglow
Thinking man they're moving slow
Mom and Dad please get to me
It's my gift I want to see

Then the time has come at last
Opening gifts is finally past
Children laughing running round
But there's one who's looking down

The one who's looking down you see
Many years ago was me
The pain I felt inside that day
Made me want to run away

With gifts of toys I was let down
But it's love that day I found
When my big sis saw what was done
Gave three dollars not just one

I've grown up I've moved along
And in God I have grown strong
The past can't hurt me anymore
My big sis I still adore

Now extra gifts I keep around
I refuse to watch a frown
An image in my mind is burned
I Thank God for my lesson learned
