I Stayed
by Sally Hanan

I came to the fountain of grace
carrying all of my pain,
clutching to luggage of sin,
reeking with stench of my shame.

I stepped into waters of love
That broke through this hard figurine.
My sin and my shame washed away-
I knew I was finally clean.

But the painthe pain, how it shrieked,
it ranted, it twisted and tore
into the heart of my soul;
repeatedly shaking my core.

And I stayed in the fountain of grace.
None other had ever compared
to my Lord-so holy and true;
such joy in His presence was there.

I stayed and He gently reached out;
cradled my heart in his hand,
tenderly took out and placed
the thorns, wedged so deep, in his palm.

My heart is now soft loosed to love,
protected yet free, as befits
a heart that belongs to the Lord-
one with His hands wrapped around it.
