"Don't Touch"
by Ginny Winters

When we were children that's all we heard; "Don't Touch, you might break it!" Those words became a life-sentence that we have become imprisoned by. We are held captive by an invisible chain that pulls us back when we get too close. We were taught those words for safety's sake when we were young because we didn't know the harm we could do to things living or non-living. We also did not understand the harm that could befall us.

Now that we are older, now that we are wiser and we know what is harmful and what is not, we still tend to hear that phrase echoing in our ears; "Don't Touch!" We will draw back from someone who is hurting because we don't know the right words to say. We might not have anything to say, but what about a "touch"? What about a hug that someone can draw strength from, when they haven't any strength left? We need to listen to the hearts around us that are crying out:
"Touch me please,
My heart is an ice cube
It can only melt by the warmth of your hand.
A glacier could flow in the winter if warmed by the rain of my tears.
Words can bring knowledge and wisdom,
But a touch can usher in acceptance and understanding.
So touch me please, and let me touch you
That our lives would be full of the brightness of love
That the shades of loneliness would be rolled up and packed away.
