WEDNESDAY MEANS poem
by Richard L. Provencher

Wednesday Means

free meals at the church,
weekly volunteers anxious to do
their bit for Jesus, bless them.
Gathered in the corridor, a crowd
endures a culture of excitement.
"What's on the menu today?" one voice
asks. "Hamburger, lasagna, and
sandwiches the last three weeks." At least
no charge for chairs filling
up quickly. There's Hank and Dolores
and others without a
flash of cash, happy in their
friendships, wary of those
who snatch the best spots on the park bench.
Surprise. Today's menu is barbecued
chicken. Yesterday, Mary Lou had
her first baby.
