Do You Leave People Better Than you Found Them?
by Nancy Quinn

My Dad was a veterinarian in a small town in Iowa. Being in a farming community, it was mostly large animals that needed his help. I had the privilege of getting to go on calls with him on the weekends and in the summer. I loved riding in the old jeep over the graveled, dusty country roads and Dad always had a pack of Wrigley's gum in the glove box as a treat for me.

After treating the animals, my Dad would stand by the fence and chat with the farmer. The music of their deep laughter would drift over to me as I watched the animals and pet the calves' feathery soft noses through the fence. My dad's motto was to leave people better than he found them, so his jokes were well known in the community. And I don't remember a call without a smiling farmer as we left, and a firm shake of hands in friendship. My father's funeral was "standing room only" as the community showed their support at our grief and shared their stories of him. His legacy will live on, in my family's hearts, as well as all who had the privilege of knowing him.

While I'm not good at telling jokes, or remembering the correct punch lines, I like to follow my dad's motto of life. I show I care about others and try to lift them up and encourage them with a smile. I learned I don't need to have my father's talent for joke-telling. Giving people a smile and encouraging word will still carry on my father's beautiful legacy as I reach out and try to leave people better than I find them too.

Philemon 1:7 "Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God's people."

Romans 12:8 "He who exhorts (encourages), to his exhortation; he who contributes, let him do it in simplicity and liberality; he who gives aid and superintends, with zeal and singleness of mind; he who does acts of mercy, with genuine cheerfulness and joyful eagerness."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
