Are You Alive?
by Yvonne Blake March is a gloomy month in Maine. The weather flits back and forth from blustery snow to warm glowing sunny days that melt the dingy snow banks and turn icy driveways into a quagmire of slimy mud. It's too sloppy and warm to ice skate or ski or snowshoe. Yet, it's still too windy and cold to begin the spring projects of planting a garden or painting the back fence. With everyone cooped inside, emotions run high and tempers get short. Moods are as gray as the clouds that hang overhead. Energy is low, and the initiative to be creative is hard to find. Everyone feels bored and listless. We wish for something to ignite the spark of life back into us. I'm glad Easter is in March this month. It will probably snow that day, but I won't let it get me down. I'll wear my new flowery dress and white shoes to church, even if I shiver all morning. Easter is a time of renewal, of reviewing, of re-committing. It's a time to rejoice, to tell those around us that we are alive because our Savior is alive. There is a reason to be joyful, to be creative, to be energized, to be hopeful. Springtime is cleaning time. I feel like organizing things; my cupboards, my closets, my writing files. I'll sort out the useless things; half done crafts, clipped recipes, scraps of writing ideas in my filing drawer. I feel like starting new projects; new paint, new knitted sweater, new novel. My thoughts are bursting. I can't wait to write them down. How can I be gloomy, when I am alive and have so many things I could do today? So, when the wind is whipping around the corners, and gray clouds spit sleet in your face, are you going to climb back into your hibernation or are you going to choose to be alive? Are you going to mumble about the weather or cheerfully greet the day with big expectations? Are you going to comatose in front of the television or stretch your imagination and create your own masterpiece? It's a new day, a new season, a new chance to make a difference. You're alive!
