A Curious Dog
by Nancy Quinn

Our beautiful golden retriever Brandy lived up to her breed's reputation, always gentle and sweet. Living in a wooded area, we were grateful that she didn't show a lot of interest in the deer and wild turkeys who meandered through our yard. One evening I let her outside and she ambled over to the bushes. Thinking she was a little too delayed at watching the bushes with interest, I started to call her when I saw a flash of white and black and the appearance of a very busy tail.

While she didn't bark or threaten the unwelcome visitor in our yard, he still felt threatened and released his spray of toxic smell. In surprise and shock, she ran toward my voice and I quickly grabbed the hose to wash her face. We spent an interesting evening in the bathtub with tomato juice and a couple bottles of dog shampoo. The stench permeated our home and our clothes seemingly forever. I vaguely wondered if I should buy stock in air freshener!

Just like my curious pet, have you ever been curious or tempted to do something that you weren't sure you should? I encourage you to listen to your conscience and the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit. I try to be careful to not allow myself into any potential situations where I could be tempted to test my Christian walk. We all have weaknesses; for some it may be gambling, for others it may be alcohol or temptations of the flesh. When we realize our own weaknesses, it's easier to make sure we don't put ourselves in a situation of possible temptation. Sometimes the stench of sin is not easy to wash off because there are consequences to all of our actions, whether good or bad. And I want my Christian walk to smell like a rose, not a skunk!

I Peter 5:8-9 "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings."

Proverbs 22:3 "A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
