USS MONITOR vs CSS VIRGINIA poem
by Richard L. Provencher

USS Monitor vs CSS Virginia

1861 meant a country at war
iron vs industry
a challenge against slave trading,
blockades in the South.

March 1862, offshore North Carolina
a battle of seafaring wills
Captain John Warden attacking,
the Monitor answering

cannons bloodying men in smoke
and fire. Four
hours of agony, such
an historic journey.
