Lucy Mouse Discovers a Fruit of the Spirit, Joy: A Children's Story
by Nancy Quinn

Lucy Mouse sang the words on the screen in the Sunday School classroom with her friends. The little mice on the video danced and Lucy and her friends followed their movements. By the end of the song, they all collapsed into their chairs and laughed. Lucy loved to sing and learn the dances that went with the songs. Every time Lucy sang about Jesus, she felt so happy. The hour ended and she went upstairs to sit with her family for church.

Lucy Mouse listened carefully to the pastor. Sometimes she didn't understand everything, but she felt a happiness being in church and listening to the music. The pastor talked about how wonderful God was and that we should always praise him. Even when things don't go perfect, we should still have an inner happiness because we know God always loves us. The pastor asked everyone to join him as he prayed, and Lucy bowed her head and closed her eyes. After they prayed, the bells chimed and the organ began to play. Lucy Mouse smiled as she sang the final song with her family. She loved to sing happy songs about God.

After church, they scampered downstairs to their little home behind the Christmas ornament box and Lucy helped her mom fix lunch. She peeked out the window at the new slide that appeared last week in the little park by her home. She couldn't wait to play that afternoon with Missy Mouse and Moose Mouse. After lunch, she brought the dishes to the sink and then carried the bag of trash outside to the trash barrel, humming the song she learned from Sunday School. She heard her name and looked up to see Missy zooming down the new slide. Lucy raced over to join her. They took turns on the slide and then ran to knock on Moose the Mouse's door underneath the library steps to see if he was home yet.

Moose opened the door as he wiped his tears away. "Why are you crying?" asked Lucy. Moose held up the little story his Sunday school teacher had given him with the prayer on the bottom. He explained that he prayed the prayer and knows that Jesus came into his heart. Lucy asked why he was sad then and Moose started to giggle through his tears and explained that he wasn't crying because he was sad. He was crying because he was so happy!

Relieved their friend was OK, the friends pulled Moose out the door to play in the park and they let Moose go down the slide first. Lucy Mouse watched her friends and she was filled with happiness. Both her friends would be in heaven with her because Moose the Mouse and Missy Mouse had both asked Jesus to be their best friend.

Can you find the ways in the story that Lucy Mouse used the Fruit of the Spirit called Joy? Lucy shows her joy by praying, singing happy songs and praises about God, and doing things with a joyful heart. And Moose the Mouse showed his joy with tears of happiness when he asked Jesus to be his best friend. Can you think of ways that you can show this Fruit of the Spirit this week?

When you become a Christian, God will help you develop ALL the fruits of the Spirit and He gives you the Holy Spirit to help you do your best each day. If you don't know Jesus as your best friend yet, you can just pray the prayer below that Lucy, Moose and Missy did, and Jesus will come into your heart and be your best friend too! Did you know that all the angels in heaven are joyful and celebrate when someone asks Jesus to be their best friend? Can you hear them cheering for you?

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

Galations 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
