Pondering the Psalms: Psalm 1
by Paul Etterling If you were to classify people into only two groups, what would they be? The rich and the poor? The intelligent and the not so intelligent? Male and female? The educated and the non-educated? Psalm 1 reveals to us that there are only two groups of people in this world - the righteous and the unrighteous. A careful consideration of this Psalm reveals to us that God is decisive when it comes to these two groups. Concerning the righteous, He knows the way of the righteous. God knows the way of the righteous because He is righteous. He knows no other way. His knowledge of the righteous goes beyond external knowledge. His knowledge penetrates to the very heart attitude and motive. God is all knowing. He knows who is the real deal. Which category do you fall into? Your actions reveal your heart. Do you live differently than the unrighteous? In the day of Oprah, Dr. Phil and all of the judges on TV, who are you listening to? The righteous only listen to God. The old habits of your sinful man, should no longer control you. Have you found deliverance from the control of sin in your life? Harsh, unneeded words are not to be a part of our vocabulary. How do you talk to people? How is it then that we live the righteous life? First, we must delight in God's word. If God's word is a burden to us and we do not take time for it, we will never have the power of sin broken in our lives. Secondly, as we surrender all that we are and all that we have to Him, He will prosper us. Beware, you cannot fully surrender to Him if you do not delight in His word. It is a vain thing to think that God would bless us if we do not take time to delight in Him through His word.
