Baby Blue and Precious Pink
by Debbie Sickler

Baby Blue curled up around Precious Pink and they huddled together in the cozy comfort of the bag they had begun to think of as home.

I really like it here Blue. Precious settled in a little deeper. It felt like they had been together since the beginning of their existence.

Yes, it is nice, isnt it? Blue loved the softness of Precious. He could cuddle with her in the darkness for an eternity and not mind the solitude. It had been so long since either of them had seen the light of day, they had forgotten how beautiful it was. Darkness had enveloped them and they embraced it.

Early one morning, cold hands startled Blue, forcing him out of his slumber. The furrowed hands held him tightly and tugged on him rather gruffly.

Whats happening? Precious! Help me! Frightened by the sudden change, he reached and stretched, desperately clinging to Precious. He didnt know what was happening, but he wasnt ready to give up the way of life he was so accustomed to.

Blue! Hang on! Dont let go! Precious was just as confused as Blue. She entwined herself with him, but her attempt to save him was futile. The battle was lost and she was left alone in the darkness, wondering what would become of her friend.

Precious didnt know if she should feel more sorry for Blue or for herself, but she didnt have long to worry about it. Soon she too fell victim to the gnarled fingers that had ensnared her companion.

As she was pulled into the light, she felt a cold metal rod, twisting and pulling her through ancient fingers. It was an odd sensation and not very comfortable. Precious spotted her old friend Blue and grew excited, though his appearance had changed dramatically in the short time of his absence from the bag.

Baby Blue! What in the world is going on? Just look at yourself! Precious exclaimed as the torture continued to modify her previously slim and straight form into a knotted jumble.

Its ok Pink. Relax. The old woman knows what shes doing. Give her a chance to work with you and youll be so happy that you did. Take a good look at me and youll see what I mean. Blues voice sounded more content than it ever had in the gloom of their knitting bag. Precious Pink began to see him in a new way.

Those knobby old fingers had transformed her friend into a new creation. He was no longer a formless ball, all wrapped up in himself. Before Pinks eyes, lay the beautiful beginnings of a delicate baby blanket. Blue was stretched and pulled far beyond what she felt could possibly be comfortable, yet he looked wonderful. And she knew that he would someday soon be keeping a little baby warmly swaddled.

He now had a purpose in life. Pink longed to share in that purpose and be made new herself. She stopped resisting the hands that sought to guide her, giving in to their skillful workings.

Back and forth, the knitting needle went. Poking here, looping there, until Pink was securely fastened to Blues edge and becoming a part of the blanket. She now would serve a purpose as well, because she had allowed herself to be freed from the bonds of contentment and yielded to the hands of the creator.
