God saw my embryo
by Don Costello

Our firm foundation is in Psalm 139:13-18. Although the whole passage deals with our subject, for space sake I want to focus on verse 16. "Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them." The phrase "my substance yet being unperfect", is one Hebrew word and according to two different Hebrew dictionaries, Strong's and Gesenius, the meaning is an "embryo". King David is saying here that God saw his embryo when he was in his mother's womb. As we shall see, there is more to it than just looking. In Jeremiah 1:5 the LORD says to Jeremiah, and to us all, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee;" So before we were an embryo God knew us and while we were in the embryonic stage of just 5 or 10 cells, God was forming us. God writes the script that the cells obey. According to National Geographic's Incredible Machine, "Some six billion steps of DNA in a single cell record on life's blueprint. This DNA plan for a single human life can be stretched six feet, yet it is coiled in a repository just 1/2500th of an inch in diameter, the cell's nucleus." This "written" chemical record determines the color of hair, eyes, and skin. It is the entire blueprint for that person. As the baby is forming in the womb, all the cells participating obey that blueprint.

This is exactly the revelation that the LORD gave to David over 3000 years ago. In the rest of verse 16 David writes, "and in thy book, all my members were written which in continuance were fashioned when as yet there was none of them." Before we were conceived, God wrote the description and directions for the formation of all our bodily members, including our eyes, our hair, our heart, our arms and legs on script. When we are conceived that script is placed in the nucleus of that first cell, which then grew and multiplied into an embryo. At the appropriate time during the pregnancy, our bodily members are fashioned according to that script. We are indeed "fearfully and wonderfully made". His works truly are marvelous. Hallelujah!
The lesson we need to learn in all this is we have no right to destroy human embryonic life and steal the usable parts.
