Fish Tale
by Don Costello

Living in the Cincinnati area all my life I had heard several stories about divers who had seen station wagon size catfish at the base of dams that span the Ohio River. Even though there was never any proof of such a claim, the thought of catfish that size was always intriguing to me. One day, I was relaying my fascination to a friend of mine who was an angler. His interest really seemed to be sparked and he began to tell me of an incident that happened to him while he was night fishing at a local County lake. He and a friend were using a gas lantern while fishing and as they were switching positions in the boat, the lantern fell overboard. They were not far off shore and he said you could see the lantern in the tree roots under the boat and he said the lantern stayed lit all night. Naively I replied, "Really?" He said, "Yeah, and you know what? The next night we went back to the same spot and that lantern was still lit." Finding that impossible to believe, I blurted out, "Oh come on, Rick!" He said, "Hey, you take a couple feet off your catfish, I'll blow out my lantern."
