Hugs from Heaven
by Nancy Quinn

Ah, finally a relaxing day off. We were at our campsite and decided to treat ourselves with a trip to the store for ice cream. At the bottom of the hill, I noticed the massive garbage truck just backing out of the campsite and groaned. "What?" my husband asked and I remembered that I left the open bag of garbage sitting on the floor of the camper. With our two golden retrievers basking in the breezes of the air conditioned camper while we were gone, I was afraid they might also decide on a tasty snack from the bag with its tempting smells of leftover dinner from last night. We slowly drove back up the hill and my husband stopped in front of the camper. As I was getting out of the car, I heard him groan.

The brake light suddenly came on. He turned the ignition to shut the engine off and examined underneath as I rescued the bag of garbage from the camper. Looking down on the ground, he discovered the brake fluid had leaked out of the van. For once, he was thankful of my forgetfulness or we would have been on the highway with no brakes.

Was it forgetfulness, or God's providence? I know it's the latter. Do you remember when your parents gave you a warm hug and tucked you in at night as a child and you felt so warm and safe? The brake light going on right next to the camper was like a warm hug from the Lord, reassuring me that He is right with me watching over my family with His divine love and protection.

Worry of the cost of this repair reminded me to pray again. A shiny glint from the ground caught my eye and I looked down to find a bright penny. It suddenly reminded me of a story I read about someone who picks up pennies when she finds them as reminders of God's love. I rubbed my finger over the words "In God We trust" engraved on the coin and smiled as the fear left me and God's love engulfed me as the penny became a quiet reminder to trust my heavenly Father. I lovingly placed that coin on the little Bible in our camper as a constant reminder of the two hugs from heaven I got that day. Thank you, Father God. I love you too!

Psalm 5:11 "But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
