by Shakera Reid-Stewart

Recognize that you are responsible for your children

Earn the trust of your children (it does have to be earned)

Command the respect that you as a parent should receive

Accept that they will have weaknesses, but help them to overcome them

Protect your children; be an advocate for them & don't forget to pray

Try to always model the behavior you expect of them and instill values in them

Understand that quality time with children is a vital role of parenting

Reward and punishment systems are a must; don't always focus on the negative

Establish a relationship with teachers and school staff members

Control use of television, phone, computer, technological devices, etc.

Observe relationships with friends in order to eliminate negative habits

Nurture your children and show them that you care

Teach them to be ambitious and challenge themselves

Realize that you are not their friend!

Outline expectations and boundaries clearly; keep activities age-appropriate

Let them know that you love them unconditionally
