Catch More Flies
by Pat Murray

How do you react when you or someone you love is mistreated? Do you get angry and follow the old saying, "don't get mad, get even." My grandmother used to tell me you "could catch more flies with honey than vinegar." Biblically speaking, you would be "heaping coals of fire" on their head.

19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. 20 Therefore " If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head." 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:19-21 NKJV

Personally, I have to be careful to "lay out the honey" for the right reason. There may be times that I have spread it out vengefully thinking of the coals of fire doing their work. I have to remember that God said "I will repay!" Even returning evil with good has to be done in the right spirit. Striving to really overcome the evil is the purpose.

My constant prayer is that God will "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." Psa. 51:10
