But Lord, I Really Want This One
by Elsie Schuett Flynn

Matthew 6:33 (New King James Version)
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

I remember a popular country song recorded a number of years ago. The story the song tells is about the singer and his high school sweetheart. He was in love with this young woman and wanted her to be his wife; he prayed that God would grant him his desire and that they'd live happily ever. Alas! It was not to be.

It was not God's will for this relationship to last. God had other plans for this heartbroken young man. There was another woman to whom he would later give his heart and ultimately marry. The story goes on that years later, at a reunion, I think, he met up with high school sweetheart. I guess years and life choices were not very kind to her, and he realized right then and there that God did know what was best for him. The message of this song was to thank God for unanswered prayers. He realized that the woman God chose for him was indeed the best girl for him. He reflected on the wonderful life he had with his wife and the beautiful children the marriage produced, and all of the blessings he would have missed out on had things gone the other way.

We all have desires in our hearts. We pray for God to make them come true. God hears and answers all of our prayers. Sometimes He answers yes, sometimes no, and sometimes, His answer is not now. Whatever His answer is, though, we can always rest assured that He has our best interest at heart. Romans 8:28 (KJV) states: "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose". He does for us according to His will, in His way, and in His time. So let's not lose heart if He doesn't give us "this one." It's probably because He has another one in the works, one that is much better.

Dear God,
Thank you for always looking after my best interest. I admit too often my wants are based on what I think is right for me, rather than seeking what your will is for me. Help me to know if the desires in my heart are from you, and to be patient in my waiting for your will to be done in my life, the one that is always the right one. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Psalm 37:4 (New Living Translation)
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart's desires.

Psalm 145:19 (Amplified Bible)
He will fulfill the desires of those who reverently and worshipfully fear Him; He also will hear their cry and will save them.
