Look Both Ways Before You Cross the Street
by Nancy Quinn

The leaves formed a colorful canopy as we drove down the Pocono Mountain road. On our way home from church that morning, our animated conversations were suddenly put on hold as we watched a deer tentatively stand at the edge of the highway. Deer, turkey, black bears and yes, even skunks; experienced drivers here not only watch for other drivers on the road, but God's animal kingdom who we sometimes share the road with. I slowed down and passed as the deer patiently waited. My son looked back in absolute shock as he watched the deer look to the left and then to the right. Satisfied that the road was now clear, he sauntered across the road.

The Lord has certainly given instincts to the animals He created that help them to survive. And what has He given us? He has blessed us with a conscience, and the Holy Spirit who resides in our hearts and guides our steps with His quiet voice. There are so many choices out there. We can quickly make a choice that we think is right. But is it a godly choice? Will it benefit the Lord's kingdom, or just further our own selfish goals in life? Sometimes when my life is going by as a blur, I don't always pray about each decision and I think I know what's best. But the deer's instincts that Sunday morning reminded me to be cautious and take my time when I make one of the many choices that come across my path each day. Do I bite my tongue, or speak out? Do I reach out with God's love to someone, or allow my fear to keep me in my comfort zone?

As you go through the day that the Lord has blessed you with today, I encourage you to take time to look both ways before you cross the street AND listen to the Holy Spirit's wisdom in the choices that you make!

Deuteronomy 30:19
"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live."

Isaiah 7:15
"Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil and choose the good."

Philippians 1:22
"But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labor; yet what I shall choose, I know not."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
