1 Thessalonians 4:11
by Don Costello 1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; 1."And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business" a. study [5389 * philotimeomai; philos-a friend; time-honor] [Zodhiates: To make something an ambition, aspire.] b. quiet [2270 * heschazo] [Zodhiates: to rest from labor, to be quiet, live quietly, to be silent, not speaking. c. your own business [2398 * idios] [Zodhiates: properly one's own, as pertaining to a private person and not to the public, private, individual, as opposed to public, open.] d. Amplified Bible: "To make it your ambition and definitely endeavor to live quietly and peacefully, to mind your own affairs" 2. "and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;" a. work [2038 * ergazomai] [Zodhiates: to work or labor.] b. your own [2398 * idios] See above. c. hands [5495 * cherios] [Zodhiates: the hand.] d. commanded [3853 * paraggello] [Zodhiates: to pass on an announcement, to advance an order, charge, or command.] e. We are commanded to work, to have a job. Labor is an institution created by God, not man. In fact, labor as an institution was created before man. 1). Genesis 2:1-3 "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God had created and made." a). Since the act of creating is a "work", a "labor", when God created the angels, which was before he created the heavens and the earth, the institution of labor was created before the earth was created. b).
