1 Thessalonians 4:12
by Don Costello 1 Thessalonians 4:12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing. 1."That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without" a. walk [4043 * peripateo; peri-about; pateo-to walk] [Zodhiates: to tread or walk about.] b. honestly [2156 * euschemonos] [Zodhiates: decorously, decently, honestly.] c. without [1854 * exo] [Zodhiates: out, without, as opposed to within.] d. NASB: "so that you may behave properly toward outsiders" 2. "and that ye may have lack of nothing." a. This short portion of a sentence gives us one of the God ordained reasons for money. There are three reasons for money that I see in Scripture, though their may be more. 1). To have lack of nothing is to basically provide for our own. This implies receiving wages from an employer whereby I can buy goods in order not to have lack. This is one of my responsibilities. a). 1 Timothy 5:8 "But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." 2). The second reason for money is to provide for those who do lack. a). Ephesians 4:28 "Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth." 3). The third reason is to further the message of salvation, that God's Covenant may be established in the earth. a). Deuteronomy 8:18 "But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swear unto thy fathers, as it is this day."
