Lucy Mouse and the Christmas Gift, a Children's Story
by Nancy Quinn

Lucy Mouse wiggled to sit up straighter and smoothed her tail down. The sun streamed through the stained glass windows and the first lighted Advent candle flickered. She took her favorite pen and made notes on her Sunday school lesson. She looked over at her mom and she smiled and nodded.

After church, Lucy and her parents walked back downstairs to their home behind the Christmas ornaments box in the church basement. Lucy excitedly told her mom that she knew who to get a secret gift for. "Yes, I liked the pastor's idea too," said Mom. "Giving an anonymous gift for someone who doesn't expect it, but needs someone to remember them this Christmas is a wonderful idea. What a nice way to honor God's gift to us when He sent Jesus to be our Savior on Christmas so long ago!"

When Lucy and her mom went to the store the following Saturday, Lucy looked through the bin of gloves and chose a pair that looked extra warm. At home, she carefully wrapped the gloves and taped a red bow on the top of the package. She set the package on her desk and peeked out the window, her anticipation growing at the thought of giving a secret gift to someone.

The next morning, Lucy looked out the window and saw that a light snow had fallen. Grabbing the package, she stealthily made her way up the steps and placed the package on the sidewalk near the church. She scampered back down the steps as the tag "For the Shovel Man from a Friend" waved slightly in the breeze, awaiting its new owner to discover the special gift.

Lucy wrapped her bright red scarf tighter around her neck as she walked to school that morning. She looked over as the big gray rat was shoveling the sidewalk near her home. His smile looked as big as Lucy's smile did that morning as the brown gloves gripping the shovel worked quickly over the church sidewalk. The old, torn gloves were slightly peeking out of his coat pocket.

Are you looking forward to Christmas? With all the anticipation of getting gifts, it's sometimes easy to forget why we celebrate Christmas! God gave us the best gift of all by sending Jesus to earth as a baby on Christmas to be our best friend and Savior. And we can thank Him by thinking of others who need to be cheered up during the Christmas season. Have you accepted God's Christmas gift to you yet? You can! Just pray the following prayer and Jesus will come into your heart and be your best friend and Savior too! Is there someone you know who needs a surprise gift to cheer them up this Christmas? Whether it's a card that you make or a homemade ornament, who can you give a smile to this Christmas?

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

Matthew 6:3-4 "But when you give to someone in need, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
