Angels With Hooves
by LaNaye Perkins

Several days ago, I was taking a walk across our horse pasture checking the fences. My heart was heavy with the burdens life had thrown my way lately.

As I walked, I talked with God, as I often do. At one point in my conversation, I told God that I couldn't handle my problems anymore. Then, just as soon as the thought left my mind, I heard God's response in my heart. He simply said "I know". With these two simple words, God filled my mind with new understanding.

God does know. He knows that I cannot do anything in my own power, except fail. He knows that I need Him to guide my way. He knows I have spent many months struggling to cope with my problems. He knows I have come to the end of myself once more. God revealed all of this to me simply by saying; "I know".

I felt the warmth of His love for me like a physical embrace. It surrounded my battered soul and lifted my lagging spirit up. I could feel Him there, as He walked along beside me.

In that pasture He opened up my understanding. I finally understood, and now I can say "I know". I know He is with me, no matter what I will have to go through. I know He loves me more than I can comprehend. I know He will always make a way, even though I may not see it. This event was truly an epiphany, because I know I was changed by this revelation. Right there in that pasture my situation did not change, but I did. In that moment, before God, I had complete assurance that everything was going to be all right. I felt the relief that comes only from God, and peace filled my soul as we continued our walk together.

I was blessed by what had happened already, but God had another blessing in store for me. It was waiting for me as I passed through an open gate and met up with two of my geldings. They stepped forward and blocked my path, and both of them pressed in to nuzzle me. Their deep brown eyes looked straight into mine with understanding. They stood there eyeing me like noble guardians. It was as if they knew I needed a physical touch; that comfort that comes from reaching out to someone or something you know, who loves you.

While I cuddled with my two geldings I could see my mare and another one of our geldings heading toward me. They came up and did the same as the first two had done. Then another mare who was standing close by picked up her head and came over and did the same as the others.

I stood there silently, surrounded by my equine friends who had become my ministering angels. It may sound odd, but I swear I felt God's love pouring out to me through them. When I turned to walk toward the barn, all the horses followed me. Independently, they took turns and would come along side me as I walked. I would reach out and stroke their necks, and then they would quietly walk on so another one could come along side me.

As I approached the barn, each one wandered silently off. I wish I had the ability to capture the wonderment of that time adequately. It was one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had.

I wanted to share this experience with all of you who will read it. I want you to know that God always knows when we have a need. No matter where you are, He is there for you. Just as He knows the burdens of my heart, He knows your heart too. He used my herd of horses to touch me with His love, just imagine what He's willing to do for you.

From the beginning the Lord let me know I was to share whatever He inspired me to write. Now, over a decade later, I'm still sharing what He's given.
