A COFFEE FOR MILTON ACORN poem
by Richard L. Provencher

A Coffee For Milton Acorn

Away from the crowd
we gathered in
downtown Toronto 1965

in a corner restaurant
audience finished clapping
one last time until another
poetry reading

tonight only time for talk
with Ray Souster and Gwen
you too Milton.

You're gonna shine one day
reddish hair aglow
and salt-dripping words
with surging Atlantic images
pounding everyone.

Right now this 23-year old kid
is happy to buy you a coffee.
He's sure you're going
to be King of the Hill one day.

Postscript:
Years later I remember you well
Poet of the Common Man and writer
of "I Tasted My Blood." Just an
'unknown' in those days with
fire in your heart and sword of
truth running through busy fingers.
