Lost But Closer
by Marijo Phelps

When I was little
I used to sit through talent shows
Anticipating every act
And counting those to follow
Halfway through the countdown began
And I'd be sadder when each
Successive act was finished
(Except of course at my sister's
Piano recitals when I couldn't wait
To leave)

And as I grew
I used to hate for relationships to stop
Not being able to count down the
Minutes left
I would ignore signs of
The proverbial curtain time
And instead try to reach back
Grasping illusions of what might
Have been.

And as I grow now
I know what the next step is.
Not wanting my relationship with
Life to be over

I used to want to stay in a given
Point of time yet have no regrets
That I never did But I'm still
In "prime time" and I fear the thought
Of getting old, not older
But narrow, set in my ways,
Unwilling to bend or change or
Experience and grow.

May I always be able
To keep my head young,
Remain aware and alert
And live my life
Instead of having my life live me.
