A Son's Calling
by Sheila Dougal

A Sons Calling
-For Connor and Ryland-

Climbing furniture
Scaling walls
Jumping off bookcases
Running through halls
"Look mom, I'm brave!"
As you snuck into the "bearcave"
To retrieve your "sword"
Made of a stick and some scrap board
Your "bearcave" is my sofa
Sitting in the corner
You live in a house with furniture
And walls and bookcases and halls
From what I can see
But when I look through your eyes
It's quite different to me
There are mountains in my livingroom
(Looks like couches to me)
A retreat from "monsters"
Chomping at your feet
My walls are nothing less
Than sheer cliffs to be scaled
Stacking endtables and toys
And whatever else on top of the bed
With back massager in hand
You've gathered all your equipment
For the task these walls demand
"Yaaah!" Is your battle cry
As you run through the halls
Which to you are valleys of war
To be filled with courageous calls
"I have power in our God!"
With arm stretched out and "sword" lifted high
You're only three and you quote this line from a movie
But I pray this truth
Your heart will carry
For you were made to be brave and fierce
Wild and passionate
To explore and conquer
Take risks, face danger and build on top of it
But the power to be
Who you are by design
Is in our God
Who has great things for you in mind
So go!
Be brave, be strong and courageous!
Go knowing your power is in Jesus
Live life to the full
Love with abandon
Pray violently
Tearing down the enemies prisons
Be part of a great army
Taking back on our knees
What God designed to be
Beautiful, challenging
Rich in pleasure
And free
All depictions of He.
