THE GREAT DEPRESSION

by Shakera Reid-Stewart
4/25/2009 / Poetry

The mortgage is too high and all the bills are due,
How will you pay them this month? You don't have a clue!
Food prices have elevated and gas is back on the rise,
And you're not able to look into your hungry children's eyes.
No time with the family because you're working triple shifts,
Gotta hustle and do what you can until this depression lifts.
They're cutting jobs at work, and giving out the pink slips
You're anxiously expecting to hear those two words from your boss' lips
Everything has increased, yet your salary remains the same
Your credit card is declined again and you hang your head in shame
The neighborhood's going down because bad people are moving in
At night the gunshots will ring out and then the crime spree will begin
The news is depressing, reporting that the economy is bad,
As the death toll keeps rising, our situation seems very sad.
Kids are going astray and see no value in an education,
You worry and you argue with them and increase your frustration.
The more frustrated you get, the more your health declines,
It's not worth your life, but all you can see is foreclosure signs.
You toss and turn about in bed and are having sleepless nights,
Your finances have your relationship all messed up and causes senseless fights.
This list goes on and on, why shouldn't we throw up our hands and admit defeat?
Why shouldn't we just crawl in a corner and recognize that we just can't compete?
The truth of the matter is that there are people who are depending on you,
And just as in the past, this economic crisis shall pass too.
Keep fighting for your sanity, your family, your job and your life,
Look to God and He'll strengthen you and help you get through this misery and strife.
Leave the drugs, alcohol, and negative things and find things that really help you cope,
Regardless of what life throws at you, remember that there is always hope.
