Not A Loser!

by Angela Willingham
5/27/2009 / Christian Living

The other day I was talking to one of my good friends. She loves jazz and had taken the time to go out to a club where jazz was being played. Unfortunately, none of us was available to go with her, but she wanted to get out and chill. There is nothing wrong with that, she had no other intention, except to hear some good jazz. When she got to the location she found a lot of groups and couples and felt uncomfortable. She actually felt like people were looking at her as though there was something wrong with her. She said she got to thinking sitting in a club alone listening to jazz was a real loser move. When she shared this thought with me, I was very upset. Why do people have to be with us, why do we have to be with a significant other or group to do the things we enjoy? Society is what gave her that thought God didn't. In His Word God tells us, Psalm 139:13-14, For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. What about that says loser? We have to know who God says we are.

Today is February 14, 2009. To everyone February 14th is Valentine's Day. The day when couples celebrate their relationship and those of us without relationships might feel left out. The day when chocolate, flowers, cards, balloons, restaurants, movie theaters and everything we use as a sign of romance gets a financial boost and sees more business than any other day of the year. Trying to get into a nice restaurant on Valentine's Day, expect a wait. As I type this a question comes to mind, "why has one day out of the year been designated as the day of love?" That is beyond me.

For those who don't have a mate or significant other this can be seen as a time when it's painful to be alone. Old hurts come to mind. Squash them, that stuff is dead, don't let it drag you back in because you are feeling a little lonely. That is not a reason to run out and get involved in some relationship just to say you have one, but society can make it overwhelming if you do not have a strong sense of who you are and your purpose.

For along time my single friends and I have designated this as Single's Awareness Day, because you are no more aware of your singleness than on Valentine's Day. If you chose to go out on Valentine's Day, you could expect a wait, a long wait in line while watching couples, holding hands, showing affection, with candy, flowers, balloons and staring into each others eyes. If you were really in the right place you might even get the opportunity to watch a couple getting engaged. Wow, you have to be pretty secure in who you are and what you want in life at those times. Secure in your singleness and what it really means. Recognizing that if God's plan for you includes marriage, this is your time of preparation and equipping. Use this time wisely, not pouting, not feeling sorry for yourself, but allowing Him to strip off stuff that would be detrimental to your future relationship and growing in areas that will be necessary. Use this as a time of watching other couples, studying, reading and prayer so you will be ready. We think we know more than we know and God really wants to equip us during this time, not to hurt us. Celebrate with others and allow God to equip you. I am sure you have heard the saying, don't hate, celebrate. This is that time for you.

If you don't know who you are and whose you are, if you don't know your purpose, you might like my friend said think you are a loser and feel like you have a big L on your forehead. We want to discourage that thinking. Take a new attitude. This is my prep time. God has something awesome for me and He is getting me ready. God knows the time, He knows the person and He knows the reason for the delay. Trust Him and wait, because He knows what is best for you. It is important that we wait with the right attitude. You are not a loser, Psalm 139:13-14, describes who you are. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

While I think Valentine's Day is great, I am waiting patiently on the Lord to send what He has for me in the meantime I am allowing Him to strip off some stuff that would hinder my relationship. It is my desire to show my mate the King God provides for me the wonder of Love 365 days of the year, not just on Valentine's Day. It is my desire to make Valentine's Day just another day on the calendar for him as he has that experience on a regular basis. It is my desire to help my sisters and brothers get to a place where there are no losers or loser comments and Valentines Day is no longer the day of love, every day is a day of love.

If you don't remember anything else remember these two things:

1. Valentine's Day comes once a year, don't wait for it, show love every day.
2. You are not a Loser, whether you are in a relationship or not.

Scripture:
Psalm 139:13-14:
13For you(A) formed my inward parts;
you(B) knitted me together in my mother's womb.
14I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.[a](C) Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
