The First to follow Jesus Christ

by Andrey Bogdanov
7/15/2009 / Church Life

The first disciple of Jesus Christ was Simon Peter. "Well I was born in Bethsaida in Galilee. Ones my Brother Andrew and I were fishing and we see a man coming up to us, and when he spoke to us, I knew just then that it was Jesus. He said to us "follow me and I will make you fishers of man.' I did not understand at that time what it really meant, but Andrew and I stood up and followed him". Said Simon which latter by Jesus was named Peter, which means rock "Thou art Peter, and on this rock I will build a church", said Jesus.

Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist, "I always heard John refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God". Said Andrew.

The inner circle of the disciples was Peter, James (the greater) he was a son of Zebedee, John (James brother) John was the favorite disciple of Jesus. That's the inner circle of the disciples.

The rest of the disciples were Phillip an apostle from Bethsaida, Bartholomew his name is patronymic which means "song of Tolmai", Then there is Matthew the tax collector, Thomas called the twin, he was the disciple who doubted the resurrection of Christ. Then there is James (the Lesser) he was the son of Alphaeus, the Simon and Jude, who were the authors of "the Epistle of Jude. The Last disciple was Judas Iscariot, the twelve disciples who betrayed Jesus Christ.

After Jesus was risen, Peter took the leadership of the Apostles. The Apostles had a lot of work to do, they started there work on the day of Pentecost. Over the years Peter opened the church to the Gentiles, his authority is evident at the Apostle Council at Jerusalem, and Peter is founder of the church in Antioch. Andrew was a founder of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople; he organized a temple in Constantinople. Andrew is regarded as being connected with the writing of Gospel of John. James (the greater) preached in Spain, and now James is one of the most revered Spanish Saints during Middle Ages. John is the author of the fourth Gospel, and the book of Revelation God gave John a opportunity to see heaven, he is also an author of three Catholic Epistles. Phillip preached the Gospel in Asia, Bartholomew according to the historian "Eusebius", he found Gospel according to Matthew in India between 150 and 200 A.D. Matthew is the author of the first Gospel. Thomas evangelized the Parthian, Simon and Jude preached and underwent martyrdom in Persia, and wrote Epistle of Jude.

All of the disciples suffered for what they believed in and what they saw and preached. All of the disciples (except John) suffered in there death. Peter was crucified upside down, Andrew was crucified on a X shaped cross, James (the greater) was beheaded, Phillip was crucified, Bartholomew was flayed to death, Thomas was martyred, Matthew speared to death, Jude, the brother of Jesus, was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. John died o old Age. Judas (not Iscariot) - stoned to death, James (the lesser) was beaten to death with a fuller's club. Judas Iscariot committed suicide. All of the disciples except Judas Iscariot died for Christ, and because of there faith. Know the biggest question comes up Are we disciples of Christ? And if we are, would we be willing to die for him?
