Acts 20:32
by Don Costello
8/09/2009 / Bible Studies

Acts 20:32

And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

1. "And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace"

a. commend [3908 * paratithemi] [Zodhiates: "to place with someone for one's own sake"]

b. The phrase "word of his grace" is used Acts 14.

1). Acts 14:3 "Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands."

2). Paul and Barnabas boldly preached "the word of his grace". What was that word? Our answer lies in the testimony that God gave in response to that word, signs and wonders done by their hands! They were boldly preaching a gospel of salvation that included healing and miracles from the Almighty God, and God responded by doing exactly what they proclaimed he would do! Halleluiah!

2. "which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified."

a. build [2026 * epoikodomeo] [Zodhiates: To build upon, to erect a superstructure.]

b. Immediately there are passages that come to mind when I think of the phrase the word is able to build you up.

1). Romans 10:17 "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

a). Faith comes by hearing faith, and we hear faith when we hear the word of God!

2). Genesis 1:11 "And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so."

a). Seeds will reproduce after its own kind. Apple seeds produce apples, tomato seeds produce tomatoes. This is a natural law that God established and set in motion at Creation.

3). Isaiah 55:10, 11 "For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."

a). God's word will accomplish and prosper according to the purpose of why He said it! If he spoke healing it will produce healing! If He spoke salvation it will produce salvation! If he spoke freedom and victory, it will produce freedom and victory! God's word will build us up. Glory to God!

c. The word of God's grace is not only able to build us up, it is also able to after it has built us up, to give us an inheritance.

1). We have an inheritance reserved in heaven.

a). 1 Peter 1:4 "To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,"
2). It is included in the total package of salvation, an inheritance revealed by definition.

a). salvation [4991 * soteria] safety deliverance, preservation. [Scofield: safety, deliverance, preservation, healing, soundness.]

d. The critical point in this is that our receiving of the inheritance depends on how much we allow the word to build us up.

1). Salvation is received through faith.

a). 1 Peter 1:9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

b). Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

e. What is the meaning of the phrase "among all them who are sanctified"? For the understanding of that we have to turn again to when Paul got saved, and what Jesus told him of his ministry. We are set apart/sanctified by faith.

1). Acts 26:16-18 "But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me."
